Synopsis

Ena contemplates whether any word has reached them from the Tanners. Dennis informs Elsie about the notice. Elsie remains composed, resolving to avoid conflict with Ena and instead to rally support. The clasp on Annie’s gold bracelet has broken. Elsie begins her efforts with Annie, speaking “in confidence” about Ena's intention to evict them within four weeks. Annie immediately begins disseminating the news, suggesting that the Tanners are being unfairly targeted.
