Minnie noticed Jed hadn't eaten, a silent expectation that she would take his place. It was a matter of necessity; his rent was overdue. Martha had recently learned from Elsie that Christine had taken up with someone new. In the Corner Shop, Albert, quite unaware, inadvertently fueled the burgeoning gossip, pressing Elsie for details.
