Tom Silva is seldom at a loss. However, when a homeowner contacted him regarding a missing hand-turned spindle in the staircase of her early 1900s Queen Anne rowhouse, he embarked on replicating the spiral-detailed spindles on his lathe. There, he worked with straight-grain fir, meticulously turning balusters and troubleshooting a specialized technique to reproduce the intricate spiral detailing.
