The most remarkable thing about this series was definitely its visuals; it’s genuinely a gorgeous show to look at. The way it's filmed is really important to the psychological aspects, because your point of view shifts and changes along with where the characters are and what they see, which somehow manages to make even brutal killings feel almost comfortable. Beyond that though, it gets bogged down by its own issues. There’s nothing particularly surprising or original about how the story unfolds; it's a pretty standard murder mystery exploring the repercussions of provoking people’s worst impulses. A few characters don’t get enough attention, while others simply aren't helpful to the plot. I especially want to acknowledge the female characters—besides Danes, we hardly see any of them even though they are crucial for understanding the personalities or advancing the story (like Shelley), or for what happens in the narrative (like Nina). I would have liked to witness a lot more interaction between these women than I did with the men. Aggie and Shell’s connection, what little there was… wow, their emotional moments were really intense. The social observations and commentary come across as almost mocking because they're so obvious, which turns the male characters into exaggerated figures, but it does add a layer of depth to the female characters’ experiences. Overall, I would suggest watching this if you're looking for a straightforward murder mystery with an assertive lesbian author in the lead role. Maybe.
