Synopsis

In 1959, the United States Air Force captured scores of infant chimpanzees in Africa, bringing them to Alamogordo, New Mexico, where the animals and their young were integrated into the burgeoning space program. In *NATURE* magazine, "Chimpanzees: An Unnatural History" examines the lives of these primates, who were compelled to endure a demanding existence as stand-ins for humanity's exploration of the cosmos.
