"The Last Frontier" can be described as a modern take on the classic Western genre. A group of lawmen, headed by a stern Marshal, are pursuing escaped criminals across the harsh Alaskan landscape. What elevates this beyond a standard premise is the inclusion of espionage and conspiracy elements. While I realize that spy storylines have been frequently mishandled in various series, here it works surprisingly well. The dynamic between a detached CIA agent trying to apprehend a dangerous individual who has broken away from his duties, and the Marshal, whose primary concern is safeguarding his family and town, creates an engaging juxtaposition. The film also incorporates inventive, skillfully executed action sequences that occasionally verge on excessive, along with solid performances from everyone involved.
