Synopsis

Women constitute a small minority – only six percent – of the incarcerated population within European Union prisons. Typically, they are housed in separate facilities or sections designed specifically for female inmates, kept apart from male prisoners. Spain, however, has a history of establishing mixed-gender wards within its prisons, and France is currently contemplating a similar approach.
