Inspector Ricciardi is an unusual crime show taking place in Italy under Fascist rule, and it turns out to be richer than the premise suggests. The program goes further than simple cases for the inspector to resolve; it’s a complete character study that includes not just Ricciardi himself but also other people involved, even those in smaller roles. This creates a sense of depth and really brings that time period in Italy into focus. It's hard to fault completely, though—there are occasional plot issues, and some of the stories get so intricate with their twists and turns that they can be challenging to understand. Fortunately, this isn’t a frequent problem, and I found myself enjoying most of the six episodes that made up the initial season. Overall, it's an intelligently crafted series that rises above being just another show capitalizing on fondness for the past in the crime genre.
