I have to say right off the bat that 1923 is an excellent series. The time period feels authentic, the performances are superb, and the writing is strong. Still, it has some similarities to *Game of Thrones* in that the initial episode is packed with events, and what follows seems like a drawn-out introduction to the second season’s conclusion. Throughout this extended setup, you witness these characters enduring repeated suffering. The misfortunes accumulate relentlessly, which can be difficult to experience because the writers are very effective at making you invested in them. The other reviewer criticized how the Catholic Church was portrayed, but it's important to remember that the depiction is historically accurate; the church behaved and continues to behave as shown here. There’s nothing biased about it, and some of what's presented still happens currently. I appreciate that 1923 didn’t soften the historical elements to avoid offending religious viewers. I suspect most people will find this show very enjoyable, but be aware that it requires patience to fully appreciate.
