It’s disappointing to think about what this series might have achieved, but there are aspects that didn't sit well with me. On the plus side, most of the principal performers deliver strong performances, the scenery is lovely, and I appreciate the historical setting. One issue I have is the depiction of Christianity and the Catholic Church, which feels exaggerated and consumes too much screen time. The nuns and priests are shown in a worse light than organizations like the mafia or KKK. While I'm not religious myself, the portrayal seems inaccurate and excessively negative. As someone who isn’t American, I hold deep respect for Native Americans and acknowledge the immense suffering they endured regarding loss of life, land, and culture; however, attributing that solely to the Catholic Church feels like a fabrication. Also, the actress portraying Teonna is difficult to connect with and comes across as quite frustrating. Another problem is that certain scenes are drawn out unnecessarily, particularly the romantic encounters. I found myself skipping ahead because they became tedious. A third concern is the show’s distorted sense of morality. The main character killing five people is presented as acceptable—apparently, he simply had to do it—and murdering nuns and priests is justified as a form of spiritual consumption (essentially cannibalism). Even more troubling is the violence against girls in the Catholic school; while I agree that this is awful, it’s not worse than the actions taken by the supposedly “good” characters. Still, that isn't really the central issue. The extended sequence involving the Native American girl and her reasons for fleeing the school feels overly prolonged and ultimately serves no purpose. Throughout the entire season, there wasn't even a suggestion of why she or her story mattered. Everything could have been explained in just five minutes. This is the same problem that plagues the show overall: it moves too slowly, frequently losing the viewer’s interest.
