Coming in without any prior experience with *Yellowstone*, I approached this series from a completely unbiased viewpoint. The show struck me as a strange mix reminiscent of ancient Greek drama and Agatha Christie’s *Ten Little Indians*. I won't go into the reasons why, because I really want to avoid giving anything away. Like many cable shows before it—think *The Sopranos*, *Breaking Bad*, and others—this story is captivating enough to keep you invested, even if you have reservations about certain elements. It also features Sam Elliott, which is always a plus, along with strong performances from country music stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. And the supporting cast is really good too. The landscapes are stunning, the music works well, and the writing is generally quite strong. I did find myself getting annoyed by the voiceover narration; it's partly because I’m not a fan of that technique in general, but also because it seemed like the teenage character Elsa was sharing far more knowledge and historical background than someone her age would realistically possess. The contrast between her behavior early on and the later lectures she gives really highlights this. However, it wasn’t a major issue, just a bit repetitive at times, so I could easily overlook it. It's certainly worth watching, and apparently offers some understanding of the ideas and reasons behind *Yellowstone*, should I ever decide to watch that show as well.
