13 Reasons Why appears to present suicide in a way that could be seen as appealing, which is a worrying thing to depict. Hannah Baker consistently made poor decisions throughout the show’s run. She gravitated toward boys who were problematic and self-centered, overlooked those who treated her well, and didn't offer support to a friend experiencing abuse nearby. She frequently overindulged in alcohol, placed value on unimportant things, and then chose to undress in a hot tub with the same boy she had just witnessed assaulting her friend. Given that situation, is she truly shocked by what happens next? While there’s never any justification for rape, women need to be mindful of risky circumstances. If someone regularly becomes heavily intoxicated or impaired, or frequently finds themselves partially or fully nude in situations involving potentially harmful individuals, the likelihood of being exploited increases dramatically. The second season is even more frustrating than the first because it seems determined to portray all females as helpless victims constantly at the control of bad boys and men. It suggests that girls are never responsible for anything. This message alone is problematic enough, but Hannah is also allowed a reprieve from Heaven so she can reappear on Earth as a ghost to witness how distraught everyone is in her absence. This could very well encourage actual suicides among people with narcissistic tendencies who believe the world revolves around their romantic issues. What those individuals fail to grasp is that when you die, that’s it. You don't get to observe everyone falling apart because you're no longer around. It’s finished. Permanently. Ultimately, frankly, nobody really cares about your crushes or who is controlling your body. Maybe it would be worthwhile to think things through and take a break from acting foolishly. Try doing that! Perhaps you could offer something beneficial to the world instead of filling it with dramatic nonsense.
