I remember when Walkmans were around—the cassettes, the tape recorders, I experienced that era and enjoyed it immensely. I still have some old tapes tucked away somewhere that I need to find, though I don't have anything to play them on anymore. When I heard about this series, using older technology to tell a thriller drama, I was excited. Each episode is named after the number of tapes used and their sides—maybe younger viewers won’t quite grasp that reference. Even with the story being important, focusing on what happened and revealing the truth, the message resonated deeply. It's considered one of the best new shows from 2017. Netflix usually hits it out of the park, and this was no exception. After hearing so many positive comments, I wanted to see for myself what all the fuss was about. Ultimately, I wasn’t let down. However, aside from the message—a very significant one in today's world—it didn’t completely blow me away. It felt like they stretched it out too long; the entire season did. I believe it could have been much better with roughly half as many episodes to tighten up the plot and speed up the storytelling. That suicide scene was genuinely frightening; it was quite intense, and I don't think it should be shown to young people. The story centers on a boy who receives a box of tapes from a deceased girl. The girl, having taken her own life, recorded these tapes detailing what led her to make that terrible decision. Everyone who influenced her life up to her death gets a tape, and how everything concludes is the mystery revealed in the final episode. Before that, though, the way the story unfolds among those involved and their attempts to stop it are key. It’s not easy to halt these events, and the reasons behind them come to light. I initially assumed this would be a one-season show, but now, after watching the last episode, I think a second season is likely—and they've confirmed it as well. The acting and production quality were strong; many actors delivered good performances, though Dylan Minnette and Katherine Langford stood out. There’s more to come or at least that’s what I expect in the next season than what this one presented. So I anticipate enjoying the future installments even more. It's early days yet, but there isn't much room for it to go wrong. I hope they don’t extend the series beyond that point, though—they might be tempted to do so. Regardless, it was a worthwhile watch and will remain one of the best from the streaming service! You should check it out soon. 7.5/10
