This is an excellent story following a British military unit tasked with protecting a remote location at Rorke’s Drift against Zulu warriors seeking to drive out the foreign soldiers from their territory. Stanley Baker portrays "Lt. Chard," who assumes command of this group of engineers and must devise and execute a defense for their makeshift position, all while dealing with the arrogance of "Lt. Bromhead," played by Michael Caine—a man from an established military family who initially objects to being under the direction of what he considers an inexperienced leader—and the presence of a tipsy clergyman, Jack Hawkins, whose church they are stuck in. The writing by John Prebble and Cy Endfield is focused and well-paced; and John Barry provides a fittingly majestic musical score for this visually striking film, full of action sequences and also featuring some understated comedy. It effectively conveys the constant nature of the Zulu assault: their honor, bravery—and moral principles—as well as offering a sense of the profound weariness experienced by those safeguarding their outpost and their lives. There's even some stirring male vocal music included...!
