Disney’s newest animated film for families, Zootopia, centers on a bunny who is absolutely set on becoming a police officer, even though the force is exclusively made up of “predators.” The idea of a ‘prey’ cop would be unprecedented. Regardless, she works incredibly hard and manages to reach this place where anything can happen. Zootopia draws some fairly clear parallels to real-world situations; the city itself resembles New York, complete with a crafty fox scamming people. Issues like prejudice are apparent in both appearance and language. However, what stands out most about Zootopia is Judy’s unwavering determination and optimistic outlook. The animation quality rivals that of Pixar – it's flawless – and the storytelling is well-executed, featuring plenty of action and humor. Children will certainly be entertained by this film, and older viewers should appreciate the deeper themes explored within the story. Idris Elba’s portrayal of Police Chief Bogo is likely the strongest performance in the movie; his work deserves an Academy Award! It's not surprising that it has earned over a billion dollars globally, considering how little promotion it received. It receives a rating of 9 out of 10 simply because a perfect score isn’t possible.
