ZOOLANDER 2 picks up after the original 2001 comedy, which initially struggled at the box office because of its release shortly following September 11 but later gained popularity on home video. The story revisits male fashion model Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and his former rival Hansel (Owen Wilson), who have been living in isolation for several years due to a tragic event that occurred after the first film’s conclusion. They are invited back into the world of fashion by designer Don Atari (Kyle Mooney) and fashion executive Alexanya Atoz (Kristen Wiig), but find themselves out of step with the changing fashions and social attitudes of the past 15 years, feeling like relics of a bygone era. Jacobim Mugatu, played by Will Ferrell, returns as the antagonist, and the plot once again revolves around a scheme to commit a serious crime that Zoolander and Hansel must prevent, aided by an Interpol agent from the fashion police (Penelope Cruz). Critics largely dismissed this sequel, and I have to agree with their assessment. The film has numerous flaws. It seems determined to recycle jokes from the first movie almost exactly, but these familiar bits simply don’t land this time around. The Zoolander narrative is too conscious of its own status as a cultural phenomenon to recapture the original's quirky charm and underdog appeal. The pacing feels rushed; lengthy, unfunny explanations consume so much time that the genuinely humorous parts are crammed into a few brief moments, making the film feel short. And then there are the completely unnecessary cameos: Katy Perry and Neil deGrasse Tyson appear with no discernible purpose, and viewers are just expected to find them amusing. That’s strange. There were some enjoyable aspects. I consider Kyle Mooney one of the most inventive comedians currently working, and his portrayal of a tiresome hipster ("You guys suck, I love you!") provided several genuinely funny moments. Will Ferrell's performance as Mugatu is exaggerated and clearly shows considerable effort, which makes it disappointing that his role was reduced to a smaller part. However, while I chuckled at the good parts, I kept hoping they could be removed from this film and incorporated into something better. Ultimately, even those who enjoyed the 2001 movie should probably skip this one.
