This science fiction/war movie embodies the definition of "average." It’s just average across the board. Tim Thomerson plays Sarge, leading a squad during World War II in Europe. His men are ambushed, leaving only three others alive: Timothy Van Patten, Art LaFleur, and Biff Manard. Van Patten is an overly enthusiastic fan of pulp science fiction comics, LaFleur is the gruff corporal, and Manard serves as the combat reporter. The small group realizes they’re lost behind enemy lines, but their location is unknown because all their compasses are malfunctioning, apparently due to something odd happening in a nearby forest. LaFleur and Manard end up captured by the Nazis and discover an alien among the prisoners. Simultaneously, Thomerson and Van Patten find a crashed spaceship, which Thomerson promptly destroys; they then rescue their comrades, and the five of them set out to return the alien to its home. A group of aliens arrives seeking revenge but decline to assist our soldiers, who are being pursued by German forces. The film runs less than ninety minutes, yet it feels stretched out by about twenty extra minutes. The alien they encounter doesn't resemble its saviors at all, leading me to wonder if a subplot involving clashing alien factions would emerge...but that doesn’t happen. The four main actors are very easy to root for, and you find yourself hoping things work out for them. The filmmakers seem overly serious about the project, but they compensate with a strong cast and some excellent filming locations. A note regarding the special effects: they aren't good. The creature designs are poor, as are any scenes involving alien weaponry, which come across as weak glowing animations. The only truly impressive effect comes from the set design team, who constructed a massive crashed spaceship that looks substantial and believable. Also, pay attention to Richard Band’s musical score, which bears a striking resemblance to snippets of music from "Star Wars." "Zone Troopers" is an inoffensive, silly movie with a decent cast and a promising concept, but it lacked the resources to become truly exceptional. It gets close, but doesn't quite reach the mark (the alien consumes tobacco as sustenance), and I can’t wholeheartedly recommend it.
