Manuel São Bento on Zombieland

8/10 · Oct 26, 2019

It had been several years since I last watched Zombieland, and revisiting it felt like the perfect way to prepare for the release of its sequel. The film still holds up remarkably well. At a time when zombie films and television shows were beginning to emerge—The Walking Dead premiered just one year later—this post-apocalyptic comedy remains a standout among zombie movies. Zombies had already become commonplace, neither particularly funny nor frightening. Since audiences are now accustomed to seeing the undead on screen, what makes this 2009 film so effective? Part of its appeal lies in the strong cast, though their careers were at different stages then. In 2009, only Woody Harrelson was a well-established actor; Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg hadn't yet appeared in anything truly memorable, while Abigail Breslin was more recognizable than either of them. Even at just 13 years old, she had already earned an Oscar nomination for her supporting role in Little Miss Sunshine. Nevertheless, the entire cast delivers excellent performances that elevate the simple but entertaining story to a level of success that cemented its status as a zombie classic. Harrelson’s portrayal of Tallahassee, a fearless character who enjoys “the little things,” is one of his finest roles. Jesse Eisenberg isn't usually an actor I find particularly engaging, as he tends to play similar quirky and idiosyncratic characters that often don't quite work. However, Columbus is a role that logically and hilariously fits this type, making Eisenberg the movie’s primary source of comedy. From his list of rules to his unusual behavior, everything feels natural because the character's background explains his awkwardness. Stone and Breslin share some enjoyable scenes together, as do Harrelson and Eisenberg, but the former pairing has fewer memorable moments. While the female characters could have benefited from more development, their relationship provides a compelling reason to care about them. Wichita might initially seem like a typical attractive girl falling for the good guy, but she's fiercely protective of her sister, and her love for Little Rock adds depth to her character. The cast’s chemistry is undeniable; it’s clear they had a great time making this film, which enhances every conversation and action sequence. The brief runtime allows for a fast-paced story filled with fun moments and plenty of bloody zombie kills. The production design is impressive, featuring excellent practical effects, real sets, and a perfect soundtrack. Director Ruben Fleischer knew exactly what he wanted the movie to be and never attempted to make it something more. While there’s a romantic element and some backstories that aren't particularly humorous, nothing feels forced or contrived. The film doesn't overstay its welcome because Zombieland isn’t intended as a romance or drama; it’s purposefully campy, creatively plays with stereotypes, and delivers 88 minutes of pure entertainment. It’s disappointing to see that in 2019, studios seem to have forgotten how to make films like this! Each year brings numerous blockbusters that could be incredibly entertaining if filmmakers simply allowed them to be what they were intended to be, but instead, they feel the need to incorporate a relevant political message or social commentary. Zombieland possesses all the qualities of a classic blockbuster: a fantastic cast, a straightforward narrative packed with exciting sequences, a short runtime and fast pacing, compelling characters, and hordes of zombies. Combine these elements with a funny screenplay full of jokes, and you have one of the best zombie movies of the century. It’s rare to find films without any perceived flaws; Zombieland has its cliches and occasional lazy exposition, but it more than compensates for them with roughly 80 minutes of spectacular entertainment. It's a zombie cult classic. Watch it! Rating: A-
