Zog, a dragon whose scales are a vivid orange, is set on earning a gold star from his instructor at dragon school, though he struggles considerably. His attempts at flying put everyone around him at risk, and his roar lacks any real power; as a result, he’s relying on the idea of kidnapping a princess to achieve success. Luckily for him, he's already made friends with a girl named Pearl, so it’s easy to understand how pleased he is when he learns that she’s actually a princess who feels restless and desires to be rescued. However, her royal uncle isn't happy about this situation and sends the valiant Sir Gadabout on a mission to bring her home. A significant confrontation seems inevitable, but it remains to be seen who will emerge victorious. The film runs for slightly more than five minutes longer than necessary, yet it’s still an animated experience that is cheerfully colorful (and almost dreamlike), providing amusement as the young dragon tries to improve his skills while Pearl actively seeks a way out of her tedious existence. The narration follows a generally pleasant rhyming pattern, the music has a lighthearted quality, and there are enough adventures to maintain interest throughout.
