It seems like what we'd now label a "mockumentary," this film centers on a man who appears to be everything to everyone—except maybe himself. The story unfolds through interviews, news footage, and other seemingly real recordings, detailing the life of someone who managed to insert himself into countless situations, social classes, and political groups, changing his appearance to maintain a constant level of visibility. His motivations for being where he was, is, or would be remained unclear to those around him. Eventually recognized, he draws the attention of psychiatrist “Dr. Fletcher” (Mia Farrow), who tries to understand what motivated him. Was he driven by a desire for recognition or something else entirely? Did he want to be noticed or simply blend in? Regardless, his true intentions were overshadowed as publicity took control of his life and pulled him into various legal, ethical, and practical problems. I didn't really mind the somewhat unbelievable nature of the storyline or his fairly standard developing connection with his therapist, but as a commentary on documentary filmmaking and archival research, it serves its purpose well, nodding to the style of silent films while illustrating how fleeting public opinion and devotion can be, alongside exposing media hypocrisy. It does go on for some time, and once the narrative’s course is set, I found myself more engaged with how it was presented than what it was about. Still, it's worth seeing.
