Is this film somehow inferior to *Never Say Never Again*? It comes remarkably close. Both rank among the hundred worst films ever produced. This movie is a jumbled-together disaster. The person who wrote it seems unable to express a single clear idea. There’s nothing consistent about the whole thing. Because of this, it's hard to grasp what the film intends to convey; it’s lifeless, unexciting, and lacking in creativity. The character portrayed by Connery doesn't have any discernible reason for anything he does. He seems to prefer unremarkable women over attractive ones. His dialogue lacks purpose, and while the writing itself is bad, even talented actors can bring some sense to poorly written lines—Connery doesn’t manage it. It’s possible he was trying not to, given how terribly the screenplay was constructed. * Connery takes on the role of a barbarian who finds himself in a sophisticated society resembling ancient Rome. That's essentially the story. A ridiculous character appears and acts as though he is divine, and the writer treats him that way without explanation, which doesn’t make any sense. He rambles on and vaguely resembles Guy Fawkes, so maybe that’s what the writer was going for. It’s hard to tell because everything is so poorly presented. The conclusion involves a senseless slaughter where the barbarians kill the attractive women instead of assaulting them. The writer and director completely mishandled this aspect, destroying any sense of believability. I would even go so far as to say that this one is worse than *Never Say Never Again*, because you can doze off during that movie, while in this one, irritating sounds and people try to keep you from sleeping.
