The story unfolds in an overpopulated world where authorities enforce a policy prohibiting births. As a result, mechanical infants become commonplace, and anyone attempting to conceive a biological child faces severe consequences. "Russ" (played by Oliver Reed) and "Carol" (Geraldine Chaplin) are committed to having a baby, and the film chronicles their efforts to conceive while evading the constant surveillance of the ruling power. While the premise is undeniably inventive—clearly inspiring later works like "Logan's Run"—the actual production quality falls short. Diane Cilento’s appearance is striking; however, similar to many of her roles, her performance feels detached and unemotional, particularly when dealing with intensely personal themes—perhaps a mechanical baby would have been more appropriate for her character. There are moments of suspense as they attempt to protect their child, and the film makes clear its commentary on a society devoid of individual liberty; still, the overall experience is underwhelming, and Reed’s portrayal also feels unconvincing. It's unfortunate because the movie held promise, but ultimately failed to fulfill it.
