You’re Next delivers on the thrills and violence expected from a slasher movie, though it's held back by a weak narrative and some underwhelming acting. The plot follows a familiar formula—a group of attackers violently breaks into a house—and while there are attempts at surprising turns, they mostly come across as foreseeable and not particularly shocking. The story relies on the common horror trope where the main character possesses unexpected skills or training that enable her to fight back effectively. While this isn’t inherently bad, it diminishes some of the fear that comes from putting ordinary people in extraordinary situations. The acting is generally subpar; Sharni Vinson stands out and essentially holds the movie together. The portrayals of the parents are notably poor—their dialogue feels unnatural and awkward. The other actors aren't terrible, but they don’t leave a lasting impression. Ultimately, my enjoyment of this film comes down to the graphic nature of the kills, the suspense, and the intense moments throughout. Certain scenes were so brutal that I reacted aloud, which is always a plus in a slasher.
