I generally don’t care for movies about dysfunctional families resolved by someone from the outside, so these kinds of stories rarely impress me. It’s unusual to find a worthwhile example, and that's what made this one such a pleasant surprise; I anticipated another letdown, but halfway through, I was genuinely impressed. The plot has some good turns as well. There are quite a few unexpected developments in the later part of the film, nothing spectacular, but they work well given the story and the people involved. It’s yet another movie about someone breaking into a house. A family gathers at their remote vacation home to celebrate their parents' wedding anniversary. Gradually, all the children arrive with their significant others, and then, during dinner, an attack happens. The ensuing chaos leaves the family unsure of what to do. However, one member’s response complicates matters for the intruders. What occurs afterward and how everything resolves itself is the rest of the narrative. Initially, it's important to note that this isn’t a horror film, despite being labeled as such; it’s more accurately described as terror—a category we don’t really have, so it falls under horror but thriller is probably the best way to describe it. Sharni Vinson delivers a strong performance, largely due to how her character is written. This is easily the filmmaker's finest work to date, at least until his next major projects are released. It’s a film that can be experienced in one sitting, and naturally features a small cast. Sequels are often made for mediocre movies, but this one truly deserves a continuation, so I hope there will be one. Fans of the genre should definitely check it out. _8/10_
