It’s an enjoyable film I could see myself watching again, especially if you appreciate crude humor and are looking for something different. Fantasy movies don't often have much comedy, and comedies rarely incorporate fantasy elements, so it seems like those involved thought they were tapping into a fairly specific audience. However, the feeling is that someone wrote what could have been an excellent Dungeons & Dragons movie and then deliberately tried to undermine it with jokes throughout. There’s potentially a film deserving of 9 out of 10 stars buried within this one if the story had just been taken a little more seriously. Danny McBride and James Franco essentially deliver their usual performances, though they seem to be lacking distinctive accents compared to the rest of the cast. Franco adopts a nervous delivery that Zoey Deschanel echoes, but she mostly functions as a plot device with only a couple of amusing moments; it’s easy to imagine a parody where her character is simply replaced by a sex doll and the film pauses whenever she's supposed to have dialogue. Natalie Portman is considerably more talented than the other actors in this movie, and I can’t say for sure what convinced her to take on such a role beyond the chance to portray a strong female character in a D&D-style setting. I would have been interested in seeing that character become the focus of a series of films. She serves as an excellent foil to the group of silly characters, using understated humor while still playing well off their crude jokes; and she’s genuinely funny. The narrative follows a fairly predictable structure for an RPG adventure, but it features memorable characters and villains, and I'm seriously considering adapting it into a campaign adventure myself. Lazar is surprisingly well-developed as a villain, with a solid network of support staff and resources, despite his rather straightforward objective. Ma-Tee-Tee, despite being overly dramatic, might be one of my favorite antagonists. He’s a leader who apparently built an entire society to his specifications, either acquiring or creating his power. What's more, he established a system—albeit an unfair one—that allows warriors the opportunity to fight for their freedom. There are many things to appreciate about this movie, contrasted with all the additions intended to generate attention through comedy.
