James (played by Asa Butterfield) and Hayley (Cora Kirk) are parting ways to spend Christmas with their families. It’s after they've boarded separate trains that they both wish they were together, so they secretly switch trains, each unaware of the other’s actions. Soon, she arrives at his family home, and he arrives at hers, leading to a lightly humorous story about the ups and downs of the holiday season. It becomes clear that neither has been completely truthful with their families—but will everything work out before Christmas dinner? The plot is admittedly far-fetched and relies heavily on familiar Christmas tropes, but there are some enjoyable performances from Daniel Mays, David Bradley, Dame Harriet Walter, and Angela Griffin which help keep things moving pleasantly for ninety minutes. There’s plenty of snow, a few glasses of warm spiced wine, and even a dog named Peanut—what's not to appreciate? It's unlikely you’ll recall it later on, even if you haven’t had anything to drink, but this film is the kind that makes you want another small pastry during the holidays, and stands out as one of the more enjoyable Christmas television specials.
