The movie depicts Washington’s formative experiences between 1753 and 1755, when he was aged 21 to 23. It portrays his time at Ferry Farm near Fredericksburg, Virginia, alongside his endeavors in Williamsburg—a city situated 140 miles southeast of the farm. The film also shows a journey into the Ohio Country, now southwestern Pennsylvania, where Washington performed surveying work and encountered Mingo warrior Tanacharison and French-Canadian military leader Jumonville. These events ultimately led to violence that ignited the French and Indian War, which spanned from 1754 to 1763. Significant incidents like the Jumonville Glen Ambush, The Battle of Fort Necessity, and The Battle of the Monongahela are shown in the film. The timeline of “The Last of the Mohicans” (1992) is two years later than what’s presented here. I mention this because those who enjoy that movie might find something to like in “Young Washington,” even though it isn't quite as visually striking or consistently engaging. The production quality is good, although Fredericksburg doesn't have any mountains and George’s older brother, Lawrence, passed away during the summer of 1752. If you are interested in more stories about historical conflicts between settlers and Native Americans from 1755, “Follow the River” (1992) and “Alone Yet Not Alone” (2008) might also be worth watching. Given that George Washington was approximately 6’2" tall, he towered over most people of his time by about six to eight inches. William Franklyn-Miller seemed well-suited for the part. The film has a running time of 2 hours and was filmed from August to October 2025 in eastern Ireland at the microWild nature preserve on Blessington Lake, which is located 20 miles southwest of Dublin in County Wicklow.
