This drama, while featuring a respectable cast, doesn’t quite overcome its underdeveloped narrative. The story revolves around water scarcity due to climate change, leading to a system of trade and control over the available supply. Farmer Ernest (Michael Shannon) and his family are attempting to survive amidst extortion and lawlessness, but they possess an advantage: a machine that assists with labor and facilitates trading for water. His daughter Mary (Elle Fanning) is in a relationship with Clem (Nicholas Hoult), a young man her father disapproves of. Following an incident during a mountain excursion involving the two men, their son Jerome (Kodi Smit-McPhee) becomes suspicious. The situation becomes complicated when Clem marries Mary’s sister, making it difficult for Jerome to pursue any potential retribution. It functions acceptably, reminiscent of "Mad Max," but lacks substantial character development; both Hoult and Smit-McPhee seem constrained by the material, with the harsh environment and climatic conditions conveying more meaning than the script itself does. The production values are sufficient, though ultimately it feels like something you’d find on television in the afternoon – easily forgotten even by those involved.
