The film presents "Brushy Bill" Roberts, claiming to be Billy the Kid just before his death in 1950 at age 90. The story then unfolds, narrated from 69 years prior, detailing how Pat Garrett (William Petersen) is tasked with pursuing Billy (Emilio Estevez) and his gang—which includes Chavez (Lou Diamond Phillips), Doc Scurlock (Keifer Sutherland), "Arkansas" Dave Rudabaugh (Christian Slater), and Henry William French (Alan Ruck). This 1990 sequel to “Young Guns,” released two years earlier, is nearly as enjoyable, and in certain aspects surpasses its predecessor. A significant improvement comes from the replacement of the soundtrack featuring 80's pop rock with a notably better score composed by Alan Silvestri. Jon Bon Jovi contributes songs to the closing credits: "Blaze of Glory" and "Billy Get Your Guns." Estevez portrays Billy, who was just 21 at the time of his supposed death in 1881, effectively capturing a rebellious spirit. Chavez and Henry are particularly appealing characters, and Slater stands out as Arkansas Dave. The cinematography beautifully showcases the landscapes of the Southwest. A standout element for me was Jenny Wright’s performance as Jane Greathouse; one scene includes a surprising moment that is later echoed in a flashback. Sadly, her acting career declined shortly after this film due to substance abuse, though I understand she's now doing well, even if she isn't currently working in the field. The movie features appearances from two well-known Western actors: James Coburn as John Chisum—he previously played Pat Garrett in Sam Peckinpah’s 1973 film “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid”—and Viggo Mortensen, who portrays one of Garrett's men. While familiarity with the first movie isn't essential for enjoyment, it would certainly be beneficial. The films performed similarly at the box office, and many viewers prefer this installment. The running time is 1 hour, 44 minutes, and filming took place in New Mexico and Arizona, specifically around Santa Fe and Tucson. GRADE: B
