Having been given a chance to see this film once more after many years—prompted by a tribute to Cloris Leachman—I felt compelled to do so, even though I feared that my adult perspective might not align with how much I enjoyed it when I was younger. Fortunately, those concerns proved unfounded. It’s certainly not intellectually demanding, but it perfectly illustrates Mel Brooks' signature style: poking fun at movie genres and cinematic conventions. The cast clearly had a wonderful time creating this film, and that enjoyment is evident throughout. Certain moments have become iconic—like the horse’s reaction when a particular name is spoken, the amusing visual joke involving the hidden door (“Put the candle back!”), and other memorable lines. It may not be among my all-time favorites, but it was definitely worthwhile to watch again for the humor and to see what made my younger self laugh—a sensibility that I still appreciate.
