The movie centers on Charlize Theron as Mavis Gary, a previously well-regarded novelist now going through a divorce, struggling with alcohol, and feeling listless. She returns to her Minnesota hometown to reconnect with her parents—and, significantly, to pursue an affair with an ex-boyfriend who is now married and has a child. Upon arrival, she first encounters someone from high school who was previously believed to be gay and suffered severe bullying, and he advises her against pursuing this former flame – Buddy Slade, portrayed by Patrick Wilson, who appears attractive but delivers a stiff performance. I struggled to get into this film; Theron is so believably unpleasant that it provoked an intense desire to lash out at her character. The forgiving attitude of the townspeople, whose lives she would readily disrupt, only heightened my frustration! It’s unclear what audience this movie aims to reach, as it certainly didn't appeal to me. It felt superficial and empty.
