The considerable buzz surrounding the movie, with comparisons drawn to ‘Taxi Driver,’ naturally set my expectations high, fueled by the idea of Phoenix embodying an antihero reminiscent of Travis Bickle. Did I feel let down? Yes, like a child who doesn't receive their desired Christmas gift. If Joaquin Phoenix received best actor recognition at Sundance for this film, then I must be pursuing the wrong career path entirely. His character felt flat and underdeveloped, essentially just very dark with little else to offer. The hammer serves as the ‘DIY’ implement of choice, though you never witness it accomplishing any actual task. Furthermore, there's a lack of genuine intrigue or creativity regarding how and why he uses the hammer. If you haven't experienced ‘The Professional,’ featuring Natalie Portman, Luc Besson, and Gary Oldman portraying an unhinged police officer, I suggest watching that instead. I was mostly dissatisfied with this film; it fails to deliver on its promises. It’s not particularly memorable.
