Manuel São Bento on You Should Have Left

3/10 · Jul 20, 2020

This film seemed to have everything needed for success in the horror genre. David Koepp’s impressive resume—including films like Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man, War of the Worlds, and Stir of Echoes—along with Kevin Bacon and Amanda Seyfried as leads, suggested a promising premise. A psychological horror film set in a haunted house? It sounded very convincing. However, it turned out to be deeply disappointing. You Should Have Left struggles to define its genre. Koepp seems to borrow from various films (including his own work), but fails to develop the story itself. The entire movie feels incomplete, like an idea or concept that wasn’t fully explored. Bacon and Seyfried portray characters lacking depth; they don't feel like real people with motivations or personalities. Susanna, in particular, comes across as a device used to advance the plot, essentially defined only by her role as an actress. As a viewer, I finished the movie without learning anything substantial about any of the characters. Theo has a vague “past,” common for protagonists in Blumhouse horror films, which isn’t properly explained. The limited insight into his backstory comes through an unbelievable exposition dump between mother and daughter—the only development Theo receives: a life event described during a forced conversation between people who shouldn't be discussing it. The film is marketed as psychological horror, but lacks the technical elements needed to create fear or suspense. The house appears too bright, modern, and not claustrophobic at all. The editing (Derek Ambrosi) feels disconnected from Geoff Zanelli’s score, and while Angus Hudson’s cinematography has some visually appealing shots, it doesn't contribute to a proper atmosphere. It simply doesn't feel like a horror film. Like the characters, Koepp seems unsure of where he wants the story to go. There's an attempt at family drama that falls flat because there are no true *characters* to invest in. A needless science fiction element is introduced and left unexplained. The mystery surrounding the house’s size is also touched upon, but like everything else, it doesn’t progress beyond its initial concept. In fact, this aspect proves to be the most engaging part of the film, yet it isn't introduced until an hour into the runtime. It tries to follow so many different genre paths that it ultimately forgets to commit to one. Ultimately, You Should Have Left had significant potential to be a genuinely intriguing psychological horror movie, but David Koepp gets lost in the numerous ideas present. Kevin Bacon delivers a strong performance, and Amanda Seyfried (who isn’t given enough to do) also demonstrates her talent, yet they portray underdeveloped characters. The screenplay is filled with undeveloped concepts and superficial attempts at blending different genres, ultimately failing to tell a convincing story with complete character arcs and interesting plot points. Even from a technical standpoint, the brightly lit house doesn't create a suspenseful or spooky atmosphere, and the editing and score feel disjointed. It’s disappointing overall, and I can’t really recommend it. Rating: D+
