Sean Connery is back as “007,” tasked with looking into strange events involving missing American and Soviet rockets. Both nations immediately suspect each other, but "M" (Bernard Lee) suspects Japan might be involved, sending the sophisticated "Mr. Bond" on a mission there. Partnering with Japanese spy chief "Tiger" (Tetsurô Tanba), who has an unusual underground train, Bond begins tracking the “Ning Po,” located near a small island that could hold clues. The film features numerous action sequences—the aerial combat involving "Little Nelly" stands out as particularly impressive. Akiko Wakabayashi brings glamour to the screen, although her character lacks depth; Donald Pleasence appears as the villainous mastermind just before a series of predictable and uninspired battle scenes conclude what had previously been a more clever and absorbing movie that emphasized deception, intrigue, and a noticeable element of Japanese culture—including some noteworthy bathing and wedding ceremonies that "James" participates in with enthusiasm. While it's an enjoyable film, complete with the memorable Nancy Sinatra theme song composed by Barry and Bricusse, I wouldn’t consider it among the top tier.
