Life's brief, as the saying goes. You Can’t Win ‘Em All, also known as Soldiers of Fortune or The Dubious Patriots, comes from director Peter Collinson and writer Leo Gordon, featuring Tony Curtis, Charles Bronson, Michele Mercier, Fikret Hakan, Leo Gordon and Salih Guney. Bert Kaempfert handled the music while Kenneth Higgins was in charge of cinematography. The film takes place in 1922 during the final stages of the Greco-Turkish War, where two mercenaries cross paths and become involved with a dangerous assignment that promises either wealth or death—or perhaps something else entirely. This movie is full of tough guys operating under the hot Turkish sun, and it’s enjoyable because of its action sequences. It's disappointing that the writing isn’t better, as while it isn’t top-tier entertainment, it provides a good time, and Curtis and Bronson are entertaining to watch. Collinson handles the action well, adding in gunfights, explosions, fights in bars, attacks from planes, a fast-moving train, attractive women, and beautiful scenery. Bronson shows off his strength while Curtis delivers the one-liners, and the story puts these two men into a situation of betrayals, deception, and questionable reasons for doing things. They have good chemistry together; they work well as partners. The script may be lacking, but there’s enough energy, excitement, and smiles to make it worthwhile. 6.5/10
