"Le Ying" (Ling Jia) is a woman who finds herself struggling to get by, content with consuming soda and sleeping most of the time. Having inherited an apartment from her grandmother, she initially agrees to let her sister "Dou Dou" (Zi Yang), who’s going through a divorce, use it so her daughter can continue attending a private school. Following an argument about this arrangement, she leaves abruptly, resolved to find somewhere else to live on her own. This means needing to get a job and establish some structure in her life. She finds employment at a barbecue restaurant where the owner is somewhat inappropriate, but she manages to cope with him. It’s he who asks her to retrieve cigarettes from his car, which leads to an unexpected encounter with "Hao Kun" (Jiayin Lei), a boxing coach at a nearby gym. He's struggling to attract new trainees, and so she consents to become one. While it might seem unlikely that she would be a successful boxer, the events that unfold prompt her to seriously consider her identity and aspirations. This self-assessment is further highlighted by an appearance on her sister’s television program, which is presented in a very sarcastic style – more extreme than shows like "Mastermind," although there's a rather amusing disagreement among the judges. The narrative progresses at a somewhat leisurely pace; it feels longer than its two-hour runtime warrants. However, Ling Jia’s performance is commendable as her character achieves a significant sense of self-discovery. While the story relies on familiar tropes, it's also quite honest and enjoyable. There are moments of humor, some touching scenes, and just a subtle spark between the two boxers. It probably won’t stick with you for very long, and the conclusion feels somewhat unclear, but it is still worth seeing.
