Diana Dors has a remarkable opportunity here as "Mary," the woman facing imprisonment. The story establishes immediately that she shot "Lucy" near her home and that her request for freedom was denied. She's held in her cell, constantly watched by two guards, anticipating a possible pardon—or not. During this time, we gradually discover the reasons behind her violent act. It turns out she became infatuated with the rather timid "Jim" (Michael Craig), and when she realized he felt affection for someone else, she found it difficult to accept. She held onto the hope that he would eventually pick her. A devastating event then triggers a desire for retribution, and... Much of the background information is presented through dreams; while awake and passing the time in her room, she develops a connection with "MacFarlane" (Yvonne Mitchell)—a woman who appears tough but whom “Mary” comes to trust as she grapples with her feelings. She also receives visits from her separated husband, mother, and younger brother—people she’d honestly rather avoid. J. Lee Thompson begins the film straightforwardly before letting Miss Dors demonstrate how to give a powerful, memorable performance. The story moves along at a good speed, maybe slightly over-scored, but it's a well-made drama that is captivating and demonstrates this performer had considerable depth as an actress. It’s definitely worth seeing this movie.
