Allison (Jennifer Garner) and Carlos Torres (Édgar Ramírez) decided to get married because they both had a tendency to agree with anything anyone suggested—a situation that implies neither had received marriage proposals previously. Later, after having three children, their approach shifted dramatically; they began saying “no” frequently. While declining requests is a normal part of parenting, according to their kids, Allison’s methods are almost as severe as those portrayed by Norma Bates or Joan Crawford in Mommy Dearest. A parent and school employee suggests that Carlos and Allison try a "Yes Day," where they grant their children's every request within legal and safety boundaries. Allison’s first response is one of disbelief—and it’s a justified reaction; the concept seems foolish, not only as a parenting strategy (though people do attempt it in reality, Jennifer Garner included), but also as a movie idea—at best, it would be suitable for a sitcom. Nickelodeon's Victorious actually explored this same premise roughly eight years ago. Despite her reservations, she inevitably agrees to participate, along with other requests; otherwise, there wouldn’t be a film to watch (and we should all hope that isn’t the case). Ultimately, there are only two types of people who consistently say yes to everything: those trying to please others and those lacking common sense, and I suspect both were involved in creating Yes Day.
