The film’s central figure (Barbra Streisand) was raised by her father (Nehemiah Persoff) with an emphasis on independent thought and a desire for learning, despite societal limitations that restricted higher education to men. Following his death, she devises a rather bold plan: she cuts her hair and disguises herself as a male student named "Anschel" to study the Talmud. At university, she forms friendships with “Avigdor” (Mandy Patinkin) and his fiancée “Hadass” (Amy Irving), and through these relationships gradually recognizes that life extends beyond intellectual pursuits; it’s meant to be experienced. However, a request from a new friend presents a significant challenge, jeopardizing her academic goals and the independence she sought. This is where what began as an appealing and relatable story begins to falter. A harshness enters the storyline that even the impressive musical numbers can't fully soften. My initial connection with the "Yentl/Anschel" character dissolved into genuine disappointment due to the selfishness exhibited. The performances of Streisand and Irving certainly contribute to this, and it’s a sharp criticism of customs surrounding marriage—practices not exclusive to the Jewish community. Nevertheless, I was troubled by how readily this aspiring scholar would participate in something so insensitive, which ultimately diminished my investment in the narrative. The film's visual design feels genuine, and the supporting actors are initially charming, energetic, and even playful. "Papa" and "A Piece of Sky" highlight the powerful collaboration between Legrand, Bergman, and Streisand at its peak, but ultimately, did this movie portray a woman striving for personal growth or one primarily focused on her own needs? I believe that regardless of a film’s message, it's crucial for viewers to empathize with the main character. Initially, I felt that connection, but quickly found myself lacking objectivity due to how the lead character developed into someone I didn't particularly respect or trust.
