A group of outlaws seeking money and driven by desire are on the run in 1867, making their way across a desert landscape when they find themselves unexpectedly in an abandoned town. The only residents are an elderly man searching for gold and his grown daughter who lives as a young man. Serious struggles arise from that point forward. “Yellow Sky,” released in 1948, is a high-quality black and white Western film inspired by Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” It had an impact on later films such as "The Law and Jake Wade" (1958), "Day of the Outlaw” (1959), and even the science fiction movie "Forbidden Planet" (1956). There was a subsequent adaptation, set during South Africa’s gold rush, starring Vincent Price called “The Jackals” (1967). Aside from its dated musical introduction and conclusion, this film remains impressive today as a mature Western with elements of film noir. While some viewers appreciate black-and-white cinematography, I personally do not—though I can accept it—and I would be interested in seeing the movie in color. Anne Baxter was just 24 years old when she acted in the film. The runtime is one hour and 38 minutes; filming took place at Owens Lake, Death Valley National Monument, and Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California. GRADE: A-
