Growing up amidst the intense violence of 1970s Kingston, the young D (Antwayne Eccleston) is traumatized by witnessing his brother Jerry’s murder. He's then taken in by Fox (Sheldon Shepherd), a local crime boss, who sends him to London. There, he reconnects with Yvonne (Shantol Jackson), his former girlfriend, who had previously left with their son – someone D hasn’t seen for years. Things seem to be going well for him until he joins a group of musicians, only to unexpectedly cross paths with the man responsible for his brother's death. A wave of anger overcomes D (now portrayed by Aml Ameen), and nothing can stop him from pursuing retribution, leading to a confrontation with the formidable Rico (Stephen Graham). As the violence intensifies and his actions threaten those close to him, the story culminates in a final act that transforms London’s streets back into a reflection of the lawless Jamaica they had escaped. It's obvious this project was driven by passion from director Idris Elba, and initially it succeeds admirably. The dialogue feels authentic, showcasing their strong sense of community and loyalty. However, the film soon falters, devolving into a rather formulaic crime story that relies too heavily on clichés and places Stephen Graham in an unusual role. While violent, the depiction isn't overly excessive, and the script does touch upon the pointless nature of revenge leading to more revenge; still, once the plot gets going, it feels unoriginal and lacks imagination until the predictable ending. The performances are decent, particularly Ameen’s, and it’s not a terrible movie overall. However, with a different casting choice—perhaps someone like Helen Mirren—it could have easily been elevated into a two-part "Prime Suspect"-style series.
