It feels like a limited television series, and despite my efforts, I kept thinking of that “over paid, over sexed and over here” phrase as it moved along predictable, dramatic paths across its long two-and-a-half hours. The narrative unfolds in two separate storylines; the more noticeable follows the appealing “Matt” (Richard Gere), who earnestly pursues the grocer’s daughter “Jean” (Lisa Eichhorn)—who is supposedly promised to “Ken” (Derek Thompson), currently serving overseas. Simultaneously, "Helen" (Vanessa Redgrave), a married woman, finds herself attracted to captain “John” (William Devane), though their expectations for any relationship seem perhaps more intellectual. Returning to “Jean,” she must persuade her skeptical mother (Rachel Roberts) and father (Tony Melody) that his intentions are honorable. Will he be able to use his charm effectively and win her affection before potential mobilization dictates their choices? To its credit, the production values are high, with considerable care given to detail, which contributes to a sense of authenticity; however, this is essentially all it has going for it. The plot wanders without truly conveying the dangers of wartime life in southern England or how the local people coped with rationing while visitors acquired stockings and chocolate. Gere is certainly pleasing to look at, and his character possesses an inherent goodness, but perhaps that’s part of the issue—he, like everything else, is simply too agreeable. With the exception of Roberts, none of the characters truly connect. It's passable, nothing more.
