I can't help but wonder if Jaeden Martell resembles Dan Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan – he carries some of their traits throughout this rather silly science fiction story set in the future. Those who were alive back then will recall all the anxiety surrounding the year 2000 and the potential for computer failures because we could no longer use four-digit years. There were tests happening everywhere, but these two guys, “Eli” and his only friend “Danny” (played by Julian Dennison), just want to watch "Junior" on VHS to mark the occasion. A few drinks stolen from a locked cabinet give them some courage, and they decide to go to a party where Eli hopes to talk to the girl he likes. “Laura” (Rachel Zegler) seems way out of his reach, so things don’t look good for him until midnight arrives and household electronics start eliminating his competition. They need to leave immediately and find safety in an older building without any technology. Then a sad event happens to "Eli," which really gets him and his new companions concentrating on the situation at hand, and they have to quickly figure out how to stop it before robots take over and force everyone to do what they want. The film’s production is decent enough, with some clever ideas transforming old appliances like microwaves, CD players, and chainsaws into scary creatures, but the acting isn't great and the script makes most of the characters feel a bit flat. Mason Gooding does add some visual appeal, and Kyle Mooney has a funny appearance as the eccentric “Garret.” It doesn’t break any new ground, and it feels like something that could have aired on a teen TV channel, but there are moments of humor, and it's not terrible.
