It’s true that the film unfolds at a deliberate pace, but once it finds its footing, it develops into an unsettling, low-budget production featuring surprisingly effective visuals. However, reaching that point requires navigating some unremarkable dramatic sequences to understand what's happening. The story centers on ''Rachel'' (Bernice Stegers), who has been raising her son ''Tony'' (Simon Nash) for three years since ''Sam'' (Philip Sayer) abruptly disappeared. We now know his whereabouts, though she remains completely unaware. She’s also moved on and formed a relationship with American photographer ''Joe'' (Danny Brainin), so Sam's sudden return isn’t exactly appreciated by everyone. The boy is thrilled to have his father back, and Rachel attempts to accommodate him while genuinely curious about his claimed memory loss. But what does he really want? Beyond introducing Maryam D'Abo as the au pair, there’s not much positive to say about the acting or the script; it shares some qualities with certain 1970s ''Dr. Who'' episodes. Ultimately, though, it succeeds in establishing a feeling of suspense and uses the presence of a suspicious clown to its advantage. It demonstrates what can be accomplished through atmospheric music, a spinning top, old condoms, and plenty of toothpaste; thankfully, it’s not as terrible as it could have been.
