The character "Marie," also called "Rogue" and portrayed by Anna Paquin, seems determined to drain any happiness from her relationship, leading her to leave and begin a connection with "Wolverine," played by Hugh Jackman. Because they’ve both attracted the attention of the villainous "Magneto" (Ian McKellen), the well-meaning "Dr. Xavier" (Patrick Stewart) sends "Storm" (Halle Berry) and "Cyclops" (James Marsden) to retrieve them and bring them back to his school, where he intends to train these formidable mutants for a confrontation with the ambitious antagonist. “Magneto,” meanwhile, is focused on permanently resolving issues between mutant-kind and humanity’s prejudice against them. This film primarily serves as an introduction to what will become a larger series; it establishes backgrounds and identities so that we can understand each character's motivations—including those of the apprehensive humans represented by "Sen. Kelly" (Bruce Davison). I’m not certain if aiming for broader audiences (as indicated by its 12 rating) held it back, but largely this feels like a formulaic justification for extended fight sequences and special effects featuring attractive actors. There are some entertaining moments of conflict between Jackman and Marsden—thankfully without any yellow spandex—but Stewart essentially just embodies “Picard” while seated, and even McKellen’s more significant portrayal of "Magneto" lacks substantial dialogue to work with. The writing is generally weak throughout. It's enjoyable enough to watch, particularly in a theater, but I hope the future installments of the series develop stronger narratives.
