It’s agreeable enough to potentially revisit, and I can suggest it to others. It doesn't quite work as a traditional "comic book movie," but considered on its own merits, it’s acceptable, though borrowing heavily from other stories. I won’t go into an explanation of how this diverges from the source material – let's just agree that we’re both better off not dwelling on it. There are several positives to be found, like the way they handled the characters and cast, which later became a celebrated aspect of the Avengers films. Those movies had a certain energy and appeal that the X-Men series lacked from the beginning; at the time, it wasn’t obvious what was missing. It's evident Fox invested significantly in this project, largely based on the salaries paid to the actors, and there are some impressive visual effects throughout. Ignoring any concerns about faithfulness to the comics, certain elements feel forced into the narrative, and the character development seems off course. The script has a solid foundation, but it’s riddled with instances where it feels like they inserted "and then something flashy happens to keep the audience occupied." The film leans toward being a dramatic story, which they maintained, but it appears they were trying for an action movie with depth and ended up somewhere in between. The fight scenes involve characters – and I believe the actors gave their best performances – who are constrained by awkwardness, silliness, rigidity, or a lack of presence.
