The story returns to a familiar, somewhat formulaic style after "X2," making this third movie in the series feel predictable. The plot centers on “Magneto’s” anger when humans create a covert treatment for mutants. Initially, it appears we're headed toward another straightforward clash between “Magneto,” portrayed by Sir Ian McKellen, and his longtime opponent, “Xavier,” played by Patrick Stewart, along with Xavier’s group of like-minded individuals spearheaded by "Wolverine" (Hugh Jackman). However, “Magneto” has a hidden advantage: the "Dark Phoenix," which has transformed “Jean Gray” (Famke Janssen) into an unprecedented threat. The question becomes whether she can be halted, convinced to change her ways, or eliminated. Essentially, it’s more of what we've already seen – impressive special effects, plenty of explosions, and a standard good versus evil conflict. Unfortunately, the narrative itself is rather thin, and much of the dialogue seems recycled from the original film. Hugh Jackman does his best to bring some excitement to the proceedings, and Ben Foster certainly makes an impression with his winged appearance; however, beyond that, it feels like just another installment in a Marvel series destined only to set up the next one. While visually appealing, the two main actors are somewhat over-the-top in their performances, and Kelsey Grammer isn't alone in feeling disappointed by the excessively dramatic ending.
