I've never really clicked with the "X-Men" movies, and I was optimistic that this one—centered on what seems like their most appealing character—might finally break that pattern. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. “Logan,” portrayed by Hugh Jackman, has a long-standing conflict with his brother, “Creed” (Liev Schreiber), stemming from their birth in the 1800s. Years pass, and they're approached by "Stryker" (Danny Huston) and asked to join an exclusive group of mutant soldiers. Feeling let down by this prospect, “Logan” leaves and attempts to build a regular life alongside his new partner. "Stryker," however, won’t allow it, and following an unavoidable loss, the conflict escalates as an enraged "Wolverine" goes after retribution. Other familiar faces from the "X-Men" appear throughout the story, and Ryan Reynolds ("Wade Wilson") has a few brief but well-executed cameos; mostly, though, this is a poorly developed and depressing action movie that depends too much on computer graphics, with fight sequences feeling repetitive. Jackman puts in effort and does manage to assert himself within the narrative—but there’s not much sense of danger, and his defining characteristic makes the action scenes, even when they're up close, feel predictably similar over and over again. The film looks polished, but beyond that, it's instantly disposable. I regret saying so, but that’s my take.
