I can’t say this feels disrespectful, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much more enjoyable this "X-Men" film became without those two older actors who usually carry these stories. James McCoy steps into the role of a younger “Xavier,” and Michael Fassbender brings “Erik” to life. One possesses telepathic abilities, while his companion can control metal. Through sequences that flash back in time, we discover the origins of both characters, showing how they initially connected and began collaborating to protect their people amidst a world filled with human fear and distrust. Things are going well for them until “Shaw” (Kevin Bacon) reappears. He and "Erik" share a history—and "Erik" holds him responsible for atrocities committed against his Polish family by the Nazis during World War II. This desire for retribution creates a division between the two friends, leading to conflict as they – along with their respective groups – find themselves opposing each other while the threat of nuclear war hangs over humanity, caught in a complicated situation. Bacon’s performance isn't particularly strong; he doesn’t come across as threatening at all—however, others, including Jennifer Lawrence as “Raven” and Nicholas Hoult’s awkward "Hank," contribute to a fairly exciting depiction of how "Magneto" came to be and the beginnings of his later conflicts with the "X-Men." The special effects are impressive, and the story itself raises some interesting points—forgiveness, revenge, fear, and prejudice are all explored through a well-written script that doesn’t solely depend on visual spectacle to get its message across. It's best experienced in a theater; these kinds of stories don’t really work as well on television, and it is easily the strongest entry in the series I have encountered so far.
