While not the absolute worst of the _X-Men_ movies, _Apocalypse_ still fell short of expectations, mainly because previous films directed by Bryan Singer had all been so strong. It wasn't offensively bad, but it felt like less than what was anticipated considering Singer’s track record and its own merits. Some performers, including Jennifer Lawrence, seemed disengaged from the story. The visual effects were frequently substandard, to the point of being distracting even during the film’s most important scenes. Apocalypse’s scheme suffered from plot inconsistencies and lacked depth, and not every new character made a strong impression. Despite these issues, there was still plenty to appreciate. I thought some of the updated costume designs looked good, and several of the smaller storylines were captivating. Fassbender and McAvoy continued to deliver solid performances. It’s definitely not as bad as something like _X-Men: The Last Stand_, which is a fair comparison to make regarding _Apocalypse_. That was one thing I appreciated. _Final rating:★★½ - There was a lot here that I liked, but it didn't quite come together._
